Underwriting Specialist

REPORTS TO: Underwriting Supervisor
STATUS: Exempt
HOURS: M-F 8a – 5p

Job Summary:
The U/W Specialist analyzes worker’s compensation business to determine risk acceptability and pricing.

Requirements of the position include:
  • Minimum Education: College degree or a minimum of 4 years of commercial insurance experience in the workers’ compensation field.
  • In depth understanding of worker’s compensation insurance and general underwriting principles.
  • Proven track record of success in underwriting commercial insurance business.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated decision making abilities with ability to support decisions with evidence.

Essential Functions:
  • Underwriting new business applications, policy changes and renewal business, within an assigned territory
  • Gather information and use underwriting knowledge to make informed decisions relating to risk acceptability and pricing that are in line with Midwest’s underwriting philosophies and current strategies.
  • A thorough knowledge of NCCI and/or Bureau rules, policy administration policy writing and data reporting functions related to the Underwriting process. Process all transactions, new business, renewals and endorsements as required
  • Produce policy documents, file documentation as required.
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Manage a territory to meet goals and maintain work within company service standards and individual underwriting authority.
  • Build and sustain meaningful relationships with agency partners and field personnel.
